Using Spinners For Walleye Fishing

Spinners have been used as walleye fishing lures for quite a long time. That does not mean that they are antiquated or no longer effective. Spinners create vibrations in the water that attract fish. They are particularly appropriate for walleye fishing because walleyes do not hunt for food with their eyes; rather, they smell or sense movement in the water to locate food. If you use the following tips for fishing with spinners, you can also find success with this established angling method.

It is imperative to add weight to your line when you are fishing with spinners. If you do not, you......

Making Wooden Fishing Lures – Are Eyes On Lures Important?

For those out there that make your own wooden fishing lures, the question is this:

"Does painting or glueing eyes on my wooden lures improve their fish catching ability?"

Everyone has their own opinion, but many seriously good lure makers argue that having prominent eyes on your wooden fishing lures will always improve catch rates. After all, fish strike at the head of baitfish, right? Fish home in on the eye, don't they?

There are definitely times when having eyes painted on your lures doesn't matter a bit.....

I consider myself a thinking an......

Adding Sound to Homemade Lures – When and Why

I remember years ago fishing for black bream at the mouth of the Hopkins River, Western Victoria. The river was swollen because sand movement had blocked the opening, and the water was a bit colored, which was encouraging large bream onto the flats. In those days not many people realised that bream were genuine lure fishing targets, but a small group of us had been experimenting and were consistently catching good bream on hard baits. These days hard or soft baits are almost the ONLY way to fish for bream, few people bother with smelly natural baits any more!

Anyway, to cut a long story......

Heddon 740 Punkinseed Lure in Goldfish Scale Shore 9XSK

Heddon 740 Punkinseed Lure in Goldfish Scale Shore 9XSK
Click HERE for more Antique Lures.

Vintage Heddon 740 Punkinseed Wooden Fishing Lure. This early "under chin line tie" Punkinseed is in the hard to find and elusive Gold-Fish Scale Shore-Minnow. This was never a catalogued color for the Heddon Punkinseed, and is about as hard a color to find as one in Rainbow. It measures about 2 5/8" long and has shiny two-piece hardware, lip and hooks. Condition is excellent-, with one very tiny pointer (behind the left eye), again, some very light (and I mean light!) edge wear around the mouth, and finally...a portion of the belly weight paint has popped. In this case the flaws really do sound worse than they appear, and please remember, the pictures of this bait are about 3 times larger than the bait itself, so features will be accentuated. Please see pics for flaws. It has not been cleaned and is in "as found" condition, but trust me....when this bait is in your hand, the flaws are not as amplified. And what a feeling to hold this extremely rare bait in your hands, all you have to do is be the high bidder ! I believe the official Heddon number for this bait is: 739XSK, or just XSK.

Wooden Lures Part 2: Sinking Wooden Lures Increase Fishing Success!

In the first article of this series, we covered the very versatile floating/diving style of wooden bibbed minnows. In this, the second article of the series, we will have a look at wooden lures that are designed to sink on a slack line, rather than float on top and dive when the line is pulled. Having a few sinking crankbaits in your tackle box can increase your lure fishing options dramatically, which of course will increase your catch rates.

Sinking wooden lures are essentially just floating lures that have had weight added internally until they no longer float, but there are some oth......
